Serious Upsets Of The Season
There are some excellent racers that have left quite an impression during the 2009 Sprint Cup season following thirteen races. NASCAR news has made note of a few bright talents. The Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have surpassed any expectations established in the preseason. One of the Michael Waltrip Racing drivers David Reutimann, a recent winner at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, is having an fantastic season. Reutimann is very close to reaching top twelve status.
Brad Keselowski, a part-time Spring Cup driver, became a first-time winner in 2009. He won at Talladega driving for Phoenix Racing, and independent team owned by James Finch.
Other pleasant performances include former open-wheel icons Juan Pablo Montoya and Sam Hornish Jr, both showing perceptible improvement since the 2008 season.
Now, despite these pleasant surprises, there have been other drivers and teams that have performed worse than expected.
Dale Earnhardt Jr tops the roster of disappointments in 2009. When Earnhardt Jr joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, he was, by far, the best race car driver out of the team’s four drivers. As the season got underway, other teams began to close the gap until Earnhardt was lagging behind his competitors. He has yet to regain the magic he and Tony Eury Jr found in the early months of the 2008 season. Rick Hendrick dismissed crew chief Tony Eury Jr and replaced him with Lance McGrew. McGrew will serve as the interim crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Earnhardt Jr carries a huge burden on his shoulder when he is performing well; but when he struggles, the burden seems impossible for him to bear. NASCAR’s fan favorite driver must improve quickly in order to rid himself of all of the negative press.
Kevin Harvick met qualification for the Chase for the Championship in every season from 2006 to 2008 and won six races in that span. Nevertheless, he finds himself in the middle of his least productive season since his sophomore slump in 2002. It looks like a fourth Chase for the Championship just isn’t in the cards for Harvick, who hasn’t had a victory on the track since the 2007 Daytona 500.
Harvick is not the only driver from his stable that is failing to hold up to earlier expectations. His Richard Childress Racing teammates have faded since last year, most notably Clint Bowyer. After an outstanding start to the 2009 season, Bowyer has finished outside of the top ten in each of the previous seven races leading up to the Pocono 500. Jeff Burton has kept up his consistency, but it is a fact that the team’s performance as a whole is lower . Driver Casey Mears has managed to get two top ten finishes in the last four races despite his slow start at open of the season.
Rivaling Earnhardt Jr and Harvick as the largest disappointments include Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan. This marks another series of blemishes reported by NASCAR news sources. Ragan was possibly the most improved driver in 2008, but he has fallen back into obscurity. After finishing thirteenth in the championship standings in 2008, many NASCAR news groups and analysts suggested that Ragan would be one of the twelve drivers fighting for the Sprint Cup championship. The problem with this is that Ragan has scored just one top ten finish in the first thirteen races. It brings the status of the team into question.
For Carl Edwards, a teammate of Ragan, the 2008 season was marked by a Sprint series-high nine races. After thirteen consecutive losses, Edwards has not been able to perform his signature celebratory back flip. Even though he is among the top twelve in the championship standings, we all expected more out of Edwards and the No. 99 group.
